- Based on data collected by Waste Business Journal, over next five years, total landfill capacity in U.S. is forecast to decrease by more than 15%. This means that by 2021 only 15 years of landfill capacity will remain. However, in some regions it could be only half that.

THE ISSUES ARE GLOBAL
- While U.S. and China are recognized to be world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases, they are not biggest producers of solid waste per capita
- Solid waste refers to household garbage, non-hazardous trash, and litter
- Surprisingly, largest waste producers per household are found in smaller geographic countries like Kuwait and Caribbean Island nations
- Countries around globe continue to generate large amounts of waste as their populations grow and their economies expand
- Amount of waste generated by urban residents in 2016 is estimated to have doubled to 2.64 lbs. per capita per day from 0.64 kilograms per capita per day 10 years ago. On a yearly basis, equates to 2.6 billion tons per year in 2016, versus about 139 million tons per year a decade ago.
